POLICY ON SCHOOL ATTENDANCE AND BEDTIMES

It is the policy of Wexford Women’s Refuge to support mothers in continuing and progressing the education of their children while they are in residence, while recognising that the children are at all times the responsibility of their mother.

Staff Procedures.

1.Liase with local primary and secondary schools to secure placements for children of school going age.

2.Remind mothers that their children are expected to attend school every day.

3.Encourage and support mothers to get involved with the schools by checking regularly regarding their children’s progress.

4.Remind mothers to accompany their children to and from primary school.

5.Encourage mothers to help their children with homework.

N.B. On admission to the Refuge, children are allowed a settling in period of at least one week. Staff and mothers must remember, that while children are traumatised, they will not perform to their full potential. Staff are not qualified to make assessments or decisions on children’s educational needs. It is the mother’s responsibility to maintain contact with teachers.

Childrens Bedtimes

The latest bedtimes for children are the following:

1.Children under 12 must be in their bedroom’s by 8.30pm Sunday to Thursday during school terms and 9.30pm weekends and school holidays.

2.Children over 12 must be in their bedroom’s by 10.00pm Sunday to Thursday during school terms and 11.00pm at weekends and school holidays.

N.B. Mothers may decide to send their children to bed earlier. Staff should not interfere with this decision. If a woman returns to the Refuge with her children past the bedtime curfew, every effort must be made by the mother and Staff to ensure that the other residents are not disturbed.
